Visit to China

A few weeks ago I went on a British Council UK Careers Advisers’ Mission to China. This involved 2 days in Beijing and 2 days in Shanghai. It was an extremely useful and interesting trip.

The main purpose of the visit was to attend workshops and meet employers and recruitment specialists.  I visited a mixture of state–owned enterprises, privately-owned Chinese companies, and foreign-invested companies.

Obviously there is a limit to how much you can understand a country, particularly a country the size of China, in less than a week. But I felt that I learned a great deal about the current employment situation in China. Also it is so good to experience things first-hand and to get a sense of just how rapidly China’s industry and commerce is growing and developing.

I also had a little bit of time to see some of the wonderful sights including the Forbidden City in Beijing and the Bund in Shanghai. (The picture is of me and Careers Advisers from other UK Universities in Shanghai.)

At the moment I am writing a report of the visit, contacting employers that I met, and I will be putting together a presentation. So hopefully I will be able to pass on some of the key messages I learnt to staff and students over the next few months, in a variety of ways.

Hi
Sorry I have not replied before - I have been away from the office for a couple of days. I would suggest that you contact the University of Sheffield Alumni Office about setting up a Chinese student network.
Their details are at http://www.sheffield.ac.uk/alumni
on the 'Contact us' page.
Hope this is of help
Judy
