Manchester's 'Pakistan Graduate Job Fair'

The University of Manchester is holding its first “Pakistan Graduate Job Fair” on Wednesday 22nd February 2012. They have very kindly opened it up to University of Sheffield students who are from Pakistan.

There will be 17 major Pakistan and multinational organisations attending on the day to hire for graduate positions and tell students more about their opportunities. It is a chance to find out about graduate jobs available, possible internships or just explore your career options further.

The event is free to students, and held in association with The British Council, Pakistan.

All years of study are welcome to attend.

The event will be held at: The Alan Turing Building, (behind University Place) at The University of Manchester. Timings: 1.30pm – 4pm Date: Wednesday, 22nd February, 2012

(You will need to organise your own travel arrangements to Manchester.)

Graduate Case Studies

Have you had a look at our database of graduate case studies yet? It is really interesting and useful. At the moment there are just over 600 case studies of University of Sheffield graduates on the database and just under a quarter are from international students. There are more being added all the time. The case studies are written by the individual graduate and cover areas such as what they are doing now, what they like about it, how they got there, their future plans, and advice they would give to current students.
You can search by factors such as employment, further study, department, type of job, and year of graduation. At present you can’t search for just international students, but this is a feature we are planning to develop. However if you search by department and then go into the case studies you can see the nationality of the writer.
The case studies are very useful in terms of seeing the range of careers people go into from a degree and what route they took to get to their current job and where they see themselves in the future. It is always inspiring to hear people’s stories and you can learn a lot from other’s experiences

New semester, new opportunity?

Happy New Year and welcome back if you have been away. Hope you had a good break and a bit of a rest in the midst of revising.
You may have been using the holidays to also apply for graduate jobs and internships.
On that topic, have you heard about ‘The Sheffield Internship Scheme’? It offers internships with local organisations, and gives you a chance to work on projects and earn a bursary of £620. You will have the opportunity to learn new and valuable skills which will in turn enhance your CV for future employment. All internships will take place over 100 hours in total – a maximum of 15 hours per week – and must be completed by 31st March 2012.
It has been open for a while now, but there are internships are still available. Most of the closing dates for these are next week, so don’t delay. There are lots of interesting opportunities available in areas such as Website Development, Design and Marketing, PR, Arts and Theatre, Journalism etc

End of year round up

Well it is the end of the semester today – although of course at the Careers Service we will be open next week! I just wanted to wish everyone a good rest over the holidays.
However........ as our other blog ‘Contemplating Careers’ says http://careersservice.blogspot.com/
– many of the graduate schemes and internships have closing dates of the 31st December, so perhaps have a little break and then make sure you don’t miss those application deadlines!

I also wanted to congratulate the Students’ Union for winning the NUS International Students Award. http://www.shef.ac.uk/union/
They were deservedly commended for the work they do to support international students including the Societies, Give it a Go, International Events etc. I know that involvement in such activities enhances a student’s time at the University and it also adds to their employability skills (see – I never stop thinking about ‘careers’! :>)

Bu the way- while I was on the Student Union website I had a look at the latest video on there – it is brilliant!

For those of you who weren’t at their employer presentation on campus last night -Unilever have vacancies for their three year programme where successful applicants will be based in the UK for the first 1-2 years and then be based in China. Vacancies are in:-

-Supply Chain -no particular degree subject required

Reckitt Benckiser Healthcare UK Ltd has 3 vacancies for Research and Development (R&D) Assistants.

These are opportunities for graduates who want to spend some time in the UK and then return to China, as the post is based for the first 6 months in the UK (in Hull) and then in China. There could also be the possibility of working internationally in the future.
The closing date is 14/1/2012 and the Company would like the people recruited to start fairly soon after this - (which is why these vacancies are relevant for people who have completed their studies.)
The role is concerned with developing new products and providing on-going technical support to existing products.

1. Mandarin Consultant, a London-based Consultancy firm specialising in working with Chinese students and graduates, will be on campus on Thursday 24th November. They will deliver a lunchtime seminar for Chinese students and graduates who want to gain internship work experience or start their career successfully in the UK, internationally, and in China. 3. Developing Intercultural and Global Awareness Skills Talk- I will be delivering this session on Thursday 24th November 1.00pm-2.00pm in Hicks Lecture Theatre 4. This talk is about the following- “In today's international labour market employers really look for global and intercultural awareness in their graduate recruits. But what does this mean and how can you develop these skills and show employers that you have them? This talk will give you tips and pointers on how to do it and why it is important. So whether you are looking to work in the UK or abroad, this session will help you enhance your employability. This session is aimed at all students (UK, EU and International)”. There is no need to book – just turn up.

- However unfortunately it is on at the same time as the Mandarin Consultant session, so if you are a Chinese student unsure of which one to attend, I would advise you to go to the Manadarin Consultant session as this may be the only time they are on campus this year.
-Also please note if you attended the Skills for Success session on ‘Skills for the Global Marketplace’ that I ran with HSBC earlier this semester then you don’t need to attend this session as it will cover similar content.

It is a 1 hour talk – not a full workshop but we will be able to cover most of the key points. It is on this Wednesday the 16th at 1.00-2.00pm in Hicks Building Lecture Theatre 7. Important talk next week

Are you unsure about how to look for work in the UK after you complete your course in 2012, and are you unclear about the new regulations on the ‘right to work’ in the UK and what visa you will need?
Then you can’t afford to miss next week’s session. It will cover the New Tier 2 and what it means for you.
The talk is on Tuesday 8th November at 5.15pm- 7.00pm in the Student Union Auditorium and you don’t need to book in advance – just turn up on the night.

It is aimed at all international students who will complete their courses after April 2012.
Jo Holliday, the International Student Adviser at the Student Union Advice Centre, will give details about new Tier 2 and I (Judy Everett- Careers Adviser-International Students and Employers), will be talking about what this means for job seekers and how to look for work in the UK.

Careers Fairs - 1st and 2nd November

Next week is a big week at the Careers Service – we have our two largest Careers Fairs of the year.
They are the:-
It's Your Career
-Engineering, Science and I.T. Fair - Tuesday 1st November
-Business and Finance Fair –Wednesday 2nd November
Both are at 10.30am – 3.30pm in the Octagon Centre
There are over 60 Employer organisations at the Engineering, Science and I.T. Fair and over 50 at the Business and Finance Fair. So it is a fantastic opportunity to talk to employer representatives and ask your individual questions.
And don’t forget an engineering/science/IT company could offer a range of vacancies such as finance, human relations, sales, purchasing, logistics etc. So don’t think “I am not doing engineering so it isn’t worth me going on Tuesday”. It is! And the same point applies to a range of jobs being on offer at the Business and Finance Fair.
Careers Fairs in the UK may be slightly different to ones you are used to back home. The employers won’t interview you – they will expect you to apply later (usually via on on-line application form). But it is a chance for you to network, make an impression, and find out about the company. This will mean that when you do complete their application form it is likely to be of a much higher quality and can mention things that you found out in your conversation with them.

It is important to do some preparation before the Fair.
Things that I suggest you do in advance:-
-Have a look at the ‘How to Prepare’ section on the website and follow the advice there
-Register online – this will mean that you avoid the queues on the day
-Read Enterprise Rent-a-car’s tips on how to make yourself more employable

Then when you first get to the Fair, before you talk to the employers:-
-Pick up a copy of the Guide which will be available on the day. Read the introductory sections and in particular the ‘Tips for the Day’ and the section for International Students on Visa regulations for working in the UK
-Come to our Stand for International Students and pick up our flyer ‘International Students – Make the Most of the Fair’

So – it is a big couple of days for us, but hopefully it will be for you too - and you will find it a very useful and beneficial experience.

Look out for these Careers Events coming up

There are a range of Careers sessions coming up that are specifically designed for international students:-

1. 'International students how to maximise your chances of getting a graduate job'- this is a 1 hour talk that I will be doing on Thursday 27th October, 1-2pm in Hicks Lecture Theatre 7 - no need to book, just turn up. However please note this is a repeat of the session that ran on 11th October- so if you came to this one then don't need to come to this one. (But if you did attend on the 11th and found it useful, then tell your friends and encourage them to come to the one on the 27th).

2.'Staying in the UK to work - The Points-based system' - Jo Holiday the International Adviser for the Student Union Advice Centre and I will be doing a joint presentation. It is on Tuesday 8th Novemeber at 5.15pm in the Student Union Auditorium. Again no need to book- just turn up.

3. 'CV Workshop for International Students' - This is a 2-part workshop that I run with a member of staff from the English Language Teaching Centre (ELTC). It is on Thursday 10th November 2-5pm and Thursday 17th November pm. The first week is a workshop and the second week is where you have your CV individually reviewed by staff from the Careers Service and the ELTC. So you have to be able to attend both sessions. There are limited places. Booking opens on Monday 31st October and you have to come into the Careers Service with £10 to leave as a deposit (you get it back at the end of the workshops).

Northern Career Fair for Malaysian students

An organization called TalentCorp, together with some Malaysian companies, are hosting a Hari Raya Celebration and Northern Career Fair for Malaysian students in the UK.

The Malaysian companies who will be present include TM, Skrine, Motorola, Osram, Strand Aerospace, Celcom and quite a few others. There will be lots of Malaysian food there to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha, and for those who sign up with their CVs, a chance to win an iPad2, or an iPod Nano.

Important Careers Session- don't miss it!

I know that many of you have not been in Sheffield very long, but as you are probably beginning to realise, many graduate employers recruit start their recruitment process very early.

So if you are aiming to work in the UK, or for one of the big global companies, when you complete your course then it is time to start thinking about graduate jobs and what you need to have/do to get one.
You will need to understand the graduate employment market and what employers are looking for.
So come along to our Careers talk which will hopefully answer your questions. It is called-
‘INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS- HOW TO MAXIMISE YOUR CHANCES OF GETTING A GRADUATE JOB’
And takes place on Tuesday 11th October – 1-2pm in Arts Tower Lecture Theatre 6.

Deloitte Global Universities Programme (GUP)

British Council – China Employability Workshops

The British Council are running China Employability workshops which will ‘give Chinese students an insight into career opportunities available to them in China; help Chinese students to better understand employer’s needs as well as the current job market in China, and how to get ahead of the competition by enhancing their understanding of the job market’.
HR executives from major employers in China have been invited to give an overview of the competitive job market in China, talk about various aspects of recruitment from the employer’s side and share job opportunities with Chinese students. Students will also have opportunities to raise questions they might have about job hunting and career development in China. The employers are Microsoft, 58.com, Nokia Siemens Network, Nestle, Deloitte, Hay Group.

Even if your main aim is to secure a job in the UK, it is good to have a 'back-up' plan and to keep contacts with employers in your home country. This could be an excellent opportunity to do that.

Welcome Part 2!

I have already said welcome to international students who were here for Orientation Week. It was good to see many of you at our session in the Student Union Auditorium and get chance to talk to you at the following ‘Open Day’ at the Careers Service. Congratulations to Chukwuemeka Ibekwe a postgraduate student in Information Studies who won the prize draw.
I would now like to say welcome to all the rest of the international students who have arrived this week or will be arriving this weekend.
We often say that career planning and job seeking begins on Day 1 of your time at University, and that is even more important for those who you are only here for a year on a postgraduate course. Graduate Case Studies

I would like to ask for your help please.
On the Careers Service website we have recently established a database of Graduate Case Studies,
One of the reasons we have done this is because it really helps students to hear about people from their department who have been successful in their job search and who are now building their graduate careers.
We would like to keep expanding this and I definitely want us to include lots of case studies from international students who have got jobs either in the UK, the EU, their home country or globally.
So,
1. So if you have been successful in gaining employment this year, please could you input your case study? (However you may want to wait a couple of months so that you are more familiar with your job and have more to talk about in the case study - but please don’t forget about it, it really will help us and current students!)
2. If you haven’t yet been successful in your job hunting, please make a note of the link for when you do gain employment
3. If you don’t complete your course until 2012 or later – then have a look at the case studies – they may inspire you and give you ideas of types of jobs, sectors and companies in which you’d like to work

China Skills Recruitment and Networking Event

The Chopsticks Club in collaboration with the Confucius Institute for Business London is running a recruitment and networking event on Wednesday 29th June. It will be held from 3.30pm to 9.00pm at Mayer Brown LLP, 201 Bishopgate, London, EC2M3AF.

It aims to feature UK, Multinational and Chinese companies – examples of Companies who are already signed up to be at the event include Shell, Unilever and HSBC.

It costs £10.50 to attend and you must register in advance.

Success Story

A lot of students say that they would like to hear about success stories of international students – people who have gone on to get a good graduate job – and to hear about what they have done and what advice they would give to current students.
Well, we have recently added an example to the international students’ pages of our website.
Debasmita is from India and came to study for a MSc in Management, graduating last year. She had a variety of part-time jobs whilst at Sheffield and went on to get a graduate job in London with a major multi-national financial services company.

I interviewed Debasmita on film and we have edited it into a series of mini-clips on the following topics:-

Interview Workshop for International Students

There are still some places left on the International Students Workshop on Interview Skills.

Please note that it is the last one we are running on this topic this academic year, so if you need help with your interview technique then do not miss out- book now!

It is an afternoon workshop which is jointly run by the Careers Service and the English Language Teaching Centre. It is specifically designed to meet the needs of international students and covers interviews for part-time jobs, internships, placements and graduate positions.

At the session you will learn

-What UK employers expect

-How to prepare for an interview

-How to answer questions

You’ll also get the opportunity to practise your interview skills

The workshop is on Thursday 12th May 1.30pm – 5pm

It is free, but there is a £10 deposit which you get back when you attend the session.

This session is relevant to undergraduates and taught post graduates, (but not PhDs who have their on sessions organised.)

The University of the West of England has produced a new website which aims to provide a comprehensive resource for Malaysian students and graduates looking to find opportunities in Malaysia. It is also likely to be of use to those of other nationalities looking for employment and internships in Malaysia. It is called UK/Malaysia Gradlink and they have kindly made it available to all students and graduates at UK Universities free of charge.

It includes:

-Job and internship vacancy databases: providing the latest opportunities across a range of sectors

-Case studies: providing the experience and advice of successful Malaysian graduates

-Company profiles: where graduate employers give key advice

Government Announcement about Changes to Student Immigration

Well, we have been waiting and now the government have made the announcement about the changes they intend to make to student immigration rules.
Hopefully you have all received an email about this and the full details are on the Student Union Advice centre web pages

It seems to be a mixture of good news and bad news.
One bit of good news is that there aren’t going to be any changes to the regulations covering the amount you can work whilst you are studying. Everything stays as it is now regarding that one.

Another piece of good news is that the Post Study Work Visa will be available to all those current students who will be awarded their degree before April 2012. (The bad news is that it won’t be available for those being awarded their degree after that date.)

They have also made some changes to the regulations regarding Tier 2 visa – the full details of these are on the Union Advice Centre website above. But this is, and will be, a route that is available for international students to use to apply to graduate schemes in the UK.

Interview Workshop for International students

Then come along to this 3 hour workshop which is jointly run by the Careers Service and the English Language Teaching Centre. It is specifically designed to meet the needs of international students.

CV/Applications workshop

Booking opens today - Monday the 7th - for a CV/Applications Workshop which is specifically for International Students. It is run by myself and also a colleague from the English Language Teaching Centre. The workshop is in 2 parts which run on 2 Thursday afternoons – the 17th and the 24th February- and you have to be able to attend both. The first session covers what makes a good CV and Application and in the second part you get your CV individually checked by someone from the Careers Service reviewing the content and structure etc, and then by someone from the ELTC who is reviewing the spelling, punctuation, grammar etc.
So don’t miss out – call in to the Careers Service to book a place -you’ll need to bring £10 in cash to leave as a deposit which you get back at the second session. (This workshop oftens books up quickly so don't leave it too late to reserve a place.)

Another Virtual International Careers Fair - (Asia Pacific)

It must be ‘the season’ for Virtual International Careers Fairs - (I mentioned a couple of blogs ago one that focuses on India which starts on the 14th February)- and now there is one coming up that centres on the Asia-Pacific region.

(Virtual Fairs are just like normal recruitment Fairs except that it all takes place on-line – which makes it a lot easier for you if you are looking for work internationally.)

It starts on Monday 31st January and runs for 2 weeks until the 11th February.

The fair is co-ordinated by the University of Exeter but it is for all students and graduates across the UK.

You may be wondering what is meant by the Asia-Pacific region – well I checked it out and in this case it covers Australia, Canada, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, USA and Vietnam.

We won’t be able to see the vacancies until the 31st but they state that there will be graduate and internship vacancies and mention companies such as IBM, Intel, HSBC, Gallup and many others.

Some vacancies will have an immediate start.

Registration is not required.

Want to get some Work Experience?

If you are looking for a part-time job but not having much success, one of the reasons may be because you don’t have any previous work experience.
The Careers Service is trying to help with this problem and has developed a new initiative called TASTE OF WORK.
It offers you a chance to undertake a short placement (around 3 hours) in a real live work place – you will learn some new skills and have the chance to observe how the regular staff carry out their duties.
This new initiative is being launched by the Careers Service in semester 2 and will run from February until the Easter vacation.
A number of employers have already agreed to provide a TASTE of WORK, so now we are looking for keen, enthusiastic students to come on board – you will gain new skills, meet new people, and also gain a TASTE of WORK certificate to record your experience.
It is open to all students but international students may find it very suitable for their needs.

Vacancies in India

A couple of useful pieces of information for students from India or those wanting to work there. Firstly – there is an International Virtual Recruitment Fair coming up featuring Indian employers.
(It is just like a normal Careers Fair except that it is all online.)
It is open to all students across the UK and is being co-ordinated by a group of Universities from the West Midlands, and it is FREE to use.
At the moment they have 53 employers booked in as Exhibitors - they are major Indian Companies and many are multi-national.
The online Fair will run from the 14th to the 25th February, but you can register now and you can be doing a lot of preparation in advance. For example:- get your CV ready to upload; work out which of the Companies exhibiting you want to communicate with; prepare questions that you want to ask them.
Then when it goes live on the 14th you’ll be ready to communicate with the employers.

Even if your main plan is to secure a job in the UK, it would be a good idea to have a back-up plans which might include returning home to work for an Indian Company/Indian branch of a multi-national Company. This Fair could provide you with invaluable help re this.

Secondly
IBM Research India has some summer internships (2011) for students and graduates. These are offering excellent opportunities to undertake research placements in the areas of I.T., Software Engineering and Business Analytics. They are seeking “highly motivated graduate students who are interested in experiencing an exciting summer of research”. Applicants must have, or be studying, Masters or PhD level qualifications in the areas of Computer Science or Maths.

British Council China Workshops

Sorry this blog hs been quiet for a while - I have been off with a broken bone in my foot- a good start to my new year!! But I am back, and to use the phrase - 'everything is up and running' now - well not quite running yet! : >)

So what is happening? Well if you are in China at the moment then there are some useful workshops coming up over the next couple of weeks. They are organised by the British Council China who provide a lot of services to Chinese students who want to study in the UK at various stages of their journey. With Alumni UK, they have a network of around 20,000 members, and run a variety of events to support returning graduates. Details of the sessions are below.

Post Study Work Visa – What is happening?

A lot of students have asked us “Is the Post Study Work Visa going”? Well the answer is not yet, but it is under threat.

What is happening is that the Government wants to limit the number of migrants coming to the UK. On the 7th December they have put out a set of proposals and they are consulting about them (for 8 weeks). There are a range of proposals which will affect all International Students. These are summarised on the Student Union Advice Centre Website (I will refer to this more later on).

-One of the proposals is to get rid of the PSW Visa. (This would mean that the main route for international students to get a graduate job would be via Tier 2 whereby the employer applies for the visa on behalf of the student.)

-Another proposal is to limit the amount of time a student can work part-time whilst they are studying. Under the new proposals a student could work on campus during the week in term time but only at weekends off campus.

It is not clear when any changes might take effect from.

Whether the proposals go ahead or not will depend on the outcome of the consultation and the government’s decision. A lot of people – Employers, Universities, Student Unions and Students will be responding and will obviously be very much against the changes.

The University will be making a response and the Careers Service will be part of that. The Student Union will be making a response and you can contribute to that, you can also put in your own individual response.

So this is bad news. My advice would be to make sure your voice is heard. Go to the Student Union Advice Centre website to read a summary of the proposals and put your views. Student Union Advice Centre

PSW Group Checking Sessions

This message is of relevance to those students who have completed their courses and are applying for the Post Study Work visa.
Jo Holliday, the International Adviser in the Student Union Advice Centre runs regular group checking sessions at this time of year to help graduates who are completing the PSW visa application form.
She has just scheduled some more extra sessions.
(This is because the UKBA has announced that from 14 December 2010 all Tier 1 Applicants will need to get their Biometrics taken as part of the application process. This will add an additional charge of £30 onto each application.)
The additional sessions are:-

-Monday 6 December 1.30-2.30pm and 2.45-4pm
-Tuesday 7 December 9.30am-10.45am and 11am-12.15pm
-Thursday 1-2.30pm and 3-4.30pm

You must ring the Student Advice Centre to book a place on 0114 2228660.
Places will be offered on a first come, first served basis.
(Please note - there will be no 1-1 checks.)
Before you book a place you need to ensure the following:

1. You have completed the latest form using the on line guide: PSW

Looking for a part-time job whilst studying?

Before I get to the main point – I hope you are coping with this amazing weather and keeping warm. We haven’t had as much snow as this, all at once, for many years!! So I hope you are getting chance to enjoy it- (building snowmen, having snowball fights etc!!) – it may make it hard to get into the University but it certainly looks beautiful.

Anyway back to the main purpose of this message-
If you are looking for a part-time job whilst studying then there is a useful session for you coming up. It is specifically for international students and it will be run by staff from our Jobshop team.
It will cover topics such as:-
- What you need to do to find part-time work in Sheffield - how to look for vacancies etc
- Your rights to work in the UK
- How to obtain a national insurance number

Having work experience really adds to your CV and is very much valued by employers.
So whether you have started your search or not, come along to this session and find out all about looking for a job in Sheffield while you are studying.

1. Schlumberger a now have vacancies for nationals from Sudan, Yemen and Iraq (in addition to the ones we have previously informed you about in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, UAE).

These are mainly vacancies for Field Engineers to work in the Oil Industry, but they also have opportunities for Researchers, Scientists and Engineers with PhDs and Petrochemical experts.

Opportunities with Unilever

There are some excellent opportunities with Unilever for Chinese students interested in a career in Marketing. What the Company is doing is recruiting graduates who will work in the UK for 2 years and then move to Shanghai to work for Unilever-China.
This is a new international programme they have launched this year, for graduates from UK Universities.
They say "Upon graduation in 2011, you will start on the Unilever Future Leaders Programme for first two years in the UK in the Marketing function. After around two years, you will move to Unilever China. In your third year as a management trainee, you will gain a deeper insight into the Chinese business. Upon successful completion of the programme, you can expect to move into a management position in marketing function within the Unilever China business."

Fake Job Alert & Beware Identity Theft

A while ago (19th July) I blogged about fake jobs- but this is an on-going problem - (and world-wide).

One of my colleagues in the Careers Service said that he had seen a couple of international students recently who had come to him with job offers that they were worried about - and they turned out to be fake.

What happens is that student puts their CV on a job search website. Later they are contacted by a Company offering a job, which sounds marvellous – (often lots of money for only a few hours work) -but it isn’t a real job – it is a scam.

There are several different kinds of scam:-

1. Where they want you to send them money in advance- a reputable Company will never do this – the idea is that they pay you, not the other way round!!

2. Where the job involves “processing customer payments” through your own bank account. They are basically looking to launder illegal money. I have covered this one in my July 19th blog posting so have a look at it this for more information.

3. Cheque- cashing scams where they send you a cheque and then later, (with a plausible excuse), ask for this money to be wired back to them. Later you find the original cheque has bounced.

So some rules to help ensure you don’t fall victim to a scam:-

-Never pay money in advance – they should pay you!

-There is a saying, which is good advice- ‘If it sounds too good to be true- then it usually is’
-Do not accept a job that involves processing customer payments through your own account
-Always check out Companies that approach you direct- check them out via the internet – do they look legitimate?
-We wary if it sounds like a standard job but then later they say that you have to work on a self-employed basis. (Also remember you can't be self -employed whilst you are on a student visa)
-There are lots of useful websites that give info about fake jobs and scams – Google those for background information
-Come and check with us if you have any doubts

A related topic is identity theft.

When you put your CV on a job search website identity thieves could possibly target the information in it to steal your identity to set up bank accounts or take out credit cards fraudulently.

To avoid this problem, when putting your CV on a job search website be careful what information you include – you can always provide full details later when you are dealing with a individual Company or person that you are confident about.

-Do not include your date of birth (because of age discrimination laws this is no longer a requirement on a UK CV)

-Do not include extra details such as marital status, place of birth etc (these are not needed on a UK CV anyway)
-Do not include your full postal address (as long as you include your email address they can contact you)
- Do not include the full postal addresses of your referees
-Only give your first and last name not your middle name or other names

I don’t want anyone to be concerned about any of this. Most jobs and companies are real and people are not trying to trick you. But there are ‘a few bad guys out there’(!) and you can take these practical and easy steps to ensure that you are not one of the people they con.

It is on Tuesday 9^th November at 6.05pm to 7.30pm in the Student Union Auditorium - no need to book- just turn up.

Jo Holliday, the International Adviser from the Student Union Advice Centre, will be talking about the regulations covering the 'right to work' in the UK (Post Study Work, Tier 1 General, and Tier 2). She will be explaining the current situation and helping you to understand how it all relates to you. She will explain about the on-going support the Student Union Advice Centre offers and will then take questions.

I will then talk a little about related Careers topics such as the graduate labour market, job search, making effective applications and Careers Service support.

Careers Fairs -Today & Tomorrow

Today and tomorrow are our big Careers Fairs. Today (Tuesday 2nd) it is the Business and Finance Fair and tomorrow it is the Engineering, Science and IT Fair.

They are a fantastic opportunity to meet employers and find out about graduate and internship vacancies.

Careers Fairs in the UK might operate differently from Careers Fairs back home so here are a few tips.

Employers won’t be looking to recruit you here and now- they won’t be conducting interviews. They will expect you to apply (usually on-line) later for their vacancies. So what is the purpose of the Fairs?

-It is for you to meet employers- to network – to ask good questions. You can then answer those questions on the application form and at interview about why you want to work for their company so much better. You can write/say things such as “When I talked to your Mr. XXX I was really impressed by what he had to say about your Company values.....” etc.

-You can find out about their views on recruiting international students – visas etc.

-You can see if they offer any specific schemes with their Company for graduates wanting to return to work in their home country

-And lots more.

My advice is do a bit of preparation before you go to the Fair. Have a look at the ‘Making the Most of the Fair’ section on the website, you can even watch a film clip about how to prepare. You can link to it for each Fair from our home page Careers
There are profiles for each employer, including some information on their policies regarding international student recruitment re each visa.
So make the most of the next 2 days!

The importance of languages

There was an interesting set of articles in the ‘Times Higher Education’ this week about the importance of languages and how UK students are increasingly not studying them in schools and Universities. TimesHigherEducation
This is an interesting debate, but it also served to remind me of the importance of international students effectively marketing all the skills they have to offer to employers.
One of the skills that you will definitely have is languages- all international students studying here will have at least 2 languages (your home language and English) and possibly others.
Employers are very interested in language skills and they may be particularly interested in recruiting people who can speak the language of countries they do, (or want to do), business with.
So make sure that you promote this ability in your CV, covering letter and application forms.
Also don’t forget the other skills that you have as an international student such as intercultural and global awareness, flexibility and adaptability (by studying abroad), knowledge of a particular country’s economy and markets? etc. (These are obviously in addition to all the skills you possess as an individual).

But if you feel that you want to continue to improve your English while you are here in Sheffield do not forget all that the English Language Teaching Centre has to offer, in terms of both classes and individual support ELTC

Next week (25-29 October) there is a Virtual Careers Fair that will be of interest to students from China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singapore and anyone seeking work in these countries.

(A Virtual Fair is just like a normal Careers/Jobs Fair, but it all takes place online – this cuts out the costs of everyone travelling to meet face-to face!)

Beware Fake Job Offers

An international graduate recently contacted us a about a job offer that she had received. She was concerned about whether it was a ‘proper’ job. When we looked into the situation, it turned out to be a fake Company who were offering students and graduates jobs in order to get access to their bank account details.

What these fake Companies do is email students, (who have put their CVs on job seeking sites), to offer them employment. The job details are usually vague, but can mention words such as - working on-line, I.T. out-sourcing, Payment Processing etc. The payment rates are usually EXCELLENT for only a few hours work.
Does It sound “too good to be true?”- Well it is!
What they are aiming to do is to eventually ask students for details of their bank account numbers in order to pay them, but also ‘to process customers’ payments’*. They will then launder illegal money through these accounts. This can obviously lead to the student being investigated by the police.
The UK Border Agency has a warning on its website about bogus Companies who are targeting foreign nationals seeking work.
So protect yourself:-
If a company, who you have not applied to, contacts you offering you work look into it further.
Check out their web and email addresses. Are they proper addresses rather than a gmail/hotmail-type address? Google them and find out what you can. If you have any doubts get advice from us, the Student Advice Centre at the Student Union, etc. Have a look at websites such as the ones below which have discussion threads about such fake job offers-

Never give your bank account details to anyone until you are sure that they are legitimate.
*(Also remember proper Companies have their own bank accounts for ‘processing customers’ payments’!)

Obviously you don’t need to be suspicious of all job offers, but the main rule is - if it sounds too good to be true it usually is!

Good news re Post Study Work Scheme

Hope you all saw the recent entry in the Student Services International Email Bulletin about The Post Study Work Scheme.
There has been a lot of debate in the press lately about the Government being likely to tighten up the right to work in the UK, but the good news is that the Post Study Work Scheme has not been affected by their interim review.
Remember, these are the “interim” changes in advance of the Government announcing any longer term changes in the Autumn – Spring onwards, after its consultation with Companies and public bodies, but let’s enjoy this good news now.

What to wear to an Interview?

Got an interview coming up and not sure what to wear?
Then you’ll find the ‘First Impressions’ DVD really useful. It is made by the University of Bedfordshire and they have made it available to all University students – you can watch it on-line via the link below.
It features several students in a ‘before and after’ style. In other words, what they were intending to wear to an interview and what they wore after they’d received expert advice from an ‘image consultant’. Don’t let that term put you off - she comes across as very friendly and gives sensible advice. She also talks about things like body language, use of the voice, handshakes etc.
As the DVD says – first impressions really do matter and you can make a big difference in the way you come across to employers.

Good news!

We hear a lot about recession and financial cut backs at the moment. But it isn’t all bad news.
In some recent research conducted by the ‘Association of Graduate Recruiters’ and reported on in ‘The Independent ‘ it stated that almost 40% of UK Employers are planning to increase graduate recruitment this year. A snapshot survey of almost 100 Companies taken in April, found that nearly 60% say that they are still open for applications and 55% are more confident about the economy compared to 3 months ago.

Also ‘Graduate Prospects’ website state that they have had a 50% increase in advertising from recruiters in the first 4 months of 2010 compared to the same period last year.

Oddly enough, this at a time when surveys of students are showing that they are increasingly negative about their chances of getting a job.

So don’t be put off applying by thought of “there aren’t any jobs out there so there is no point in trying”.
No -one is denying that times are tough, but this report is hard evidence that there are opportunities out there. So keep applying! And come and see us at the Careers Service if you need help with your applications.

An event for those who speak Japanese and English

An organisation called Disco International is coming onto campus to give a presentation on the 4th May 1.00-2.00pm in the Fulwood Room, University House.

Disco International organise Jobs Fairs in the UK, Japan and the US for people who can speak both Japanese and English.

In their presentation they will provide the latest job market information about what is happening in Japan and careers advice on topics such as how to write a good Japanese CV and how to prepare for Japanese interviews. So if you are Japanese and want to return home to work, or if you are of any other nationality but can speak Japanese and want to work in Japan- then this will be a very useful session for you.

Working in Europe

We have recently added a link from our website to an interesting site concerning Working in Europe. It provides listings of the Top 100 Business and Technical Graduate Employers in each European country. The listing represents the views of undergraduates from that country when they were asked which Company they would most like to work for. Each Company profile has a bit of background information and a link to their website.

So if you want to work in a particular country and you are starting to do some research, this site will give you a head-start on which Companies to consider.

On the site there is also economic outlook, employment prospects and salary data for each country.

‘Coming Soon’ – interestingly, they are expanding the site to include Asia starting with China, Hong Kong and Malaysia. So I will keep an eye on this and let you know when that becomes available.

What’s happening in April?

Well lots ……but before I get to that…....I hope you are enjoying the vacation and getting the chance to do some interesting things. It is a shame the Spring weather seems to have disappeared but it could be worse, we could be having lots of snow like they are in Scotland!!

In April we will be running 3 workshops/events for International Students.

Firstly – Workshop on Interview Skills on the 15th April at 1.30-5.00pm.

This is a repeat of the one we ran last week. The students who attended seemed to get a lot out of it, so if you missed that one, here’s another chance. It is run jointly by the Careers Service and the English Language Teaching Centre. Booking for this opens on Tuesday 6th April and you book by calling in to the Careers Service with a £10 deposit which you will get back at the session.

Secondly –National Insurance Number Registration Day on Monday 19th April 10.00am-3.00pm

We have invited ‘Job Centre Plus’ staff to come to the University to help students register for a national insurance (NI) number. This is by appointment only and each appointment will last approximately half an hour. Bookings open on Wednesday 7th April and to make a booking for this, please visit the Jobshop in the Students' Union. (Jobshop is open Mon-Fri 10am-3pm (Tues from 11am) and during vacations Mon-Fri 1-3pm.)

Thirdly – CV Workshop

We are running the last one this year of our CV & Applications Workshops for undergraduates and taught post graduates. It is also run jointly by the Careers Service and the English Language Teaching Centre. This workshop is in 2 parts.
Part 1 is on Thursday 22nd April 2.15-5.00pm and it covers - What makes a good CV, Covering Letter and Application including how to tailor your CV/Application to different employers, and working with others in the group to review CVs, (including your own).
Part 2 is on the afternoon of Thursday 29th April and you have individual appointments with Advisers and Tutors from the Careers Service and E.L.T.C. to review your own CV and Covering letter (in regard to content, structure, spelling, grammar). You have to be able to attend both parts.
Booking for this opens on Monday 12th April and you book by calling in to the Careers Service with a £10 deposit which you will get back at the second session.
(Please note: this workshop is a repeat of those run in November 2009 and February 2010.)

‘Elite Saudi Careers’

There is a recruitment seminar coming up of interest to Saudi Nationals and those who want to work in Saudi Arabia.

‘Elite Saudi Careers’ is a recruitment summit which is being in London on the 16th-18th April. It aims to bring together high quality students/graduates with leading firms from Saudi Arabia. Employers already signed up to participate include Saudi Aramco, Nestle, Dow Chemical, MA’ARDEN, SIPCO (Pepsi), Boeing, Saudi Airlines etc, and they are recruiting for a variety of different types of work such as Business, Finance, Engineering, IT, Research & Development, Property & Construction etc. The event is primarily for Saudi Nationals but there are also opportunities for students/graduates of other nationalities who want to live and work in Saudi Arabia. Firstly
PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) who are one of the world’s major global financial services Companies, have vacancies for Chinese nationals studying in the UK who are looking to start their careers in the Business world in China.
The vacancies are in the areas of Assurance and Tax and successful candidates will work in China or Hong Kong.

‘Doing Business in China’
If when you return to China you are interested in setting up your own business there is an event on the 21st of April 3-5pm that will be very relevant for you. It is run by University of Sheffield Enterprise and it will be held in the Enterprise Zone. It aims to give you information about running a business in China and who can help you. There will be guest speakers, networking opportunities and free food!

Interview Workshop + 2 other items

Great that the weather is finally getting better isn’t it? It’s been a long winter!!
3 things to talk about in this blog:-

Firstly – we are running the first of a brand new workshop specifically for International Students.
It is run jointly by the Careers Service and the English Language Teaching Centre. It is on the topic of Interviews – so if you have got an interview coming up or are likely to have one- then this is the event for you. It is on Thursday 25th March 1.45pm-5.00pm. Secondly – if you are a European Citizen you may be interested to know that on the 16th of March, the European Personnel Selection Office will launch its procedure to select graduates to work in the EU Institutions. They have opportunities in the fields of European Public Administration, Law, Audit, Economics, and Information and Communication Technology.
They say that “A career in the EU Institutions offers a lifetime of different jobs doing interesting and challenging work that makes a real difference for Europe, in an environment where staff are encouraged to learn new skills and languages, and have opportunities to work and travel abroad”. Thirdly – are you working part-time?
Are you an outstanding student employee? If your employer agrees and you found your job through our vacancy service/JobShop, then ask your employer to nominate you for a SEOTY (Student Employer of the Year) Award. There is a category for International Student Employee of the Year.
Being an institutional, regional or even a national winner would be a fantastic addition to your CV and impress graduate employers a great deal. You could also win £100 or £200 and a framed certificate or trophy.

Are you interested in working in Malaysia?

The UKE Council for Malaysian Students contacted us yesterday to say that they are holding a Careers Fair at the University College of London on the 28th of March.

They have said that at the Fair will be the “top recruiters from the best companies and organisations in Malaysia”. A wide variety of employment sectors and industries will be represented and there will be opportunities for those looking for internships and graduate jobs. It will mainly be of relevance to Malaysian students but there are also opportunities for people of other nationalities.

The Fair takes place on Sunday the 28th March and there will be interview sessions with the Companies on the 29th & 30th March.

Interested applicants are advised to submit their CVs online BEFORE THE 7th OF MARCH at cv@ukonline.com and they will be forwarded to the Companies.

So you’ll need to be quick, but if you miss this deadline you can still attend the Fair, (but priority for interviews will be given to those who have sent their CV in advance.)

Hi, this is the first of our re-launched Careers Blogs for International Students.

My name is Judy Everett and my role in the Careers Service is Careers Adviser (International Students and Employers). I will be writing this blog with the aim of telling you all about vital pieces of information and events that will help you with your career planning and job seeking.

These will be things like job vacancies, work experience opportunities, employers coming on campus, workshops etc – that are particularly relevant to international students.

As you know we put relevant vacancies in the University's INTERNATIONAL BULLETIN’ that goes out via email to all international students. We won’t stop doing that, but this blog will have more details and have a wider range of topics.

So please get into the habit of reading this blog and tell your friends about it.

The first piece of news is that in our Careers Centre we now have a new section that contains all the additional information resources specifically for international students. So why not call in and have a look at it and pick up some leaflets. While you are here, if you wanted to, you could talk to one of our Advisers - as well as pre-booked appointments, we now have a ‘drop-in’ system, where you can wait to see an Adviser – no advance booking needed!
